Two Peaks, two days (1)

Yes, I know it's supposed to be three peaks in one day, but where's the fun in that?  Much better to take your time and enjoy the scenery that's what I think.

We started off at Horton in Ribblesdale, by this lovely church:

to climb Pen-y-Ghent.  You can see Pen-y-Ghent in the background, 694 metres high (2,277 feet in old money).

Now, I'm not a fantastic walker, but I love doing it, and as long as I can take my time, I get there in the end.  I'm like the tortoise.  Not like the hare.  Fortunately, my daughter was an excellent walking companion, and I was able to proceed at my own pace.

The weather was superbe for walking: neither too hot, nor too cold, with a lovely cooling breeze to help with the climb.

On the way up Pen-y-Ghent

It really was a great way to spend a day.

With pretty views of rolling countryside and dry stone walls.

Someone kindly laid a path, just in case we didn't know where we were going.

We found a very nice, quiet spot for lunch:

and then - reached the top!

Believe it or not, it was really busy at the top.  We had to wait ages to be able to take a picture of the Trig point without any people in it.

On the way down, we made a little detour to The Hull Pot:

a sort of open cave in the middle of nowhere.  You can see Pen-y-Ghent in the background.

Looking back, near the bottom, at a rather moody sky.  Although it looked like heavy rain, we were lucky and only had one or two very light showers.

In the evening, a trip to the pub, opposite the church, now lit up and looking even prettier.

I won't say much about the pub, apart from the fact that it had good beer.  The food was terrible.  Probably the worst I've had in a long time.  We'd have been better off cooking our own on our camping stove - yes, we were camping!

Stay tuned for the next installment.  Did I make it up the next peak?  Did my knees hold out?  Did I enjoy my night of camping?

  1. Fantastic photo's can't wait to see if the knees hold out. There is an old saying and please do not take this personally there's life in the old dog yet.
